Special Issue Information

Zadeh introduced in 1965 the concept of fuzzy set and developed with the help of it the infinite-valued in the unit interval [0, 1] fuzzy logic on the purpose of dealing with partial truths. In a second moment, when membership functions were reinterpreted as possibility distributions, fuzzy sets and logic were also used to embrace uncertainty modelling. Smarandache introduced in 1995 the concept of neutrosophic set by adding to Zadeh's membership and Atanassov's non-membership degree (1986, intuitionistic fuzzy set) the degree of indeterminacy or neutrality.  Other extensions of Zadeh's theory, that have been developed for the purpose of tackling more effectively all the forms of the existing in real world uncertainty, include type-2 and interval-valued fuzzy sets, plithogenic sets, soft sets, rough sets, grey numbers, etc. A fuzzy system is a collection of fuzzy sets related and bound together. Fuzzy systems are not only able to use their own knowledge to represent and explain phenomena of the real world, but can also increase it with the help of given data, i.e. they emulate the way in which humans think and learn. This explains why fuzzy systems and their extensions have found many and important applications to almost all sectors of human activity. This special issue aims at presenting current results on the theory and applications of fuzzy systems and their extensions. Quality review papers are also welcome summarizing a wide range of advances on this topic.
