Special Issue: Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Computation in Geosciences

2025-07-15

This Special Issue is centered on the cutting-edge research in mathematical modeling and numerical computation as applied to geoscience and engineering. It aims to serve as a platform for researchers to present novel theoretical developments, innovative computational algorithms, and significant applications. By highlighting the contemporary mathematical methodologies employed in solving complex geoscience and engineering problems, this issue promotes the advancement of interdisciplinary research at the intersection of mathematics, geoscience, and engineering.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Theoretical Mathematical Modeling: Development of advanced mathematical models for geological processes (e.g., tectonic plate movements, sediment deposition) using continuum mechanics, differential geometry, etc.

- Numerical Computation Methods: Exploration of state-of-the-art techniques (finite element, finite volume, spectral methods) for solving geoscience-related partial differential equations.

- Multi-scale and Multi-physics Modeling: Investigation of coupled models integrating physical processes (fluid-structure interaction, thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling) across scales.

- Optimization and Inverse Problems: Application of optimization algorithms and inverse techniques in geoengineering (e.g., underground structure design, parameter estimation from field data).

- Uncertainty Analysis and Stochastic Modeling: Development of methods for uncertainty quantification using probabilistic theories and Bayesian statistics.

- Data-driven Mathematical Models: Integration of machine learning with traditional models for geological data interpretation and prediction, emphasizing algorithmic analysis.

- High-performance Computational Mathematics: Exploration of parallel/distributed computing, GPU acceleration, and cloud-based techniques for large-scale geoscience simulations.
